5 Tips for keeping your kitchen clean and hygienic

1. Clean your kitchen counters and appliances every day

 

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, where family and friends gather to cook, eat and socialize. However, it can also be a source of illness if not kept clean. Bacteria and other microbes can thrive on countertops, cutting boards and other surfaces, leading to foodborne illness. Additionally, dirt and grime can build up on appliances, making them less efficient and more likely to break down. For these reasons, cleaning your kitchen counters and appliances every day is important. A simple solution of soap and water is usually all that’s needed to remove dirt, grime and bacteria. However, some surfaces may require a more heavy-duty cleaner. Furthermore, disinfect countertops and cutting boards after preparing raw meat, poultry, or fish. 

 

2. Wipe down your cabinets and drawers at least once a week

 

Most of us are good at cleaning the visible surfaces in our homes. We dust the furniture, sweep the floors, and wipe down the countertops. But what about those places that we don’t see daily? Cabinets and drawers are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning, but they can actually be some of the dirtiest places in your home. Dust and grease can build up quickly, making them a breeding ground for bacteria. To keep your cabinets and drawers clean, make a habit of wiping them down at least once a week. A damp cloth should be all you need to remove any built-up dirt and grime. And if you have any particularly stubborn spots, a little soapy water will do the trick. 

 

3. Sanitize your stovetop regularly

 

It’s likely that your stovetop gets a lot of use every day. Over time, they can become covered in grime and bacteria. That’s why it’s essential to clean and sanitize them regularly. You may use a commercial kitchen cleaner or make your own natural solution using vinegar and water. Whichever way you choose, be sure to scrub thoroughly, paying special attention to any areas that seem particularly dirty. Once you’ve finished scrubbing, rinse away all the cleaner with hot water and dry the surfaces with clean towels. 

 

4. Vacuum and mop the floors at least once a week

 

To keep your floors clean, you’ll need to vacuum and mop them regularly. At a minimum, you should vacuum and mop the floors once a week. You may need to do it more often if you have pets or small children. Vacuuming removes dirt, dust, and hair from the floor, while mopping removes stains and spills. When mopping, be sure to use a cleaning solution that is appropriate for your flooring. For example, if you have hardwood floors, you’ll want to use a mild soap and water solution. If you have tile floors, consider using a more robust cleaning solution. No matter what type of flooring you have, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning.

 

5. Keep your sink area clean

 

The kitchen sink is one of the most used areas that need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Spot clean spills right away, and clean the sink regularly with soap and water. Be sure to dispose of food waste properly, and don’t let it build up in the sink. If you have a garbage disposal, run it regularly to keep it from getting clogged. And if you notice any leaks, be sure to fix them right away.
